Western Digital SiliconEdge Blue - 256 Go
AnandTech"I've repeated it enough times that you should get the point by now - Western Digital's SiliconEdge Blue is just a bit behind the performance of an Indilinx based SSD. The drive performed relatively well in our tests. TRIM worked as expected under Windows 7. Compared to a standard hard drive it's great, but so are just about all other SSDs. Given that the Blue isn't the fastest SSD in the world, what this really boils down to is price."

Benchmark Reviews"Unfortunately, most new SSDs coming to market are faster and compliant with 3rd-generation SATA standards. While the current retail prices push the WD SiliconEdge-Blue series into the same territory as faster SATA-6Gbps SSD products, these high prices are still launch-week fresh and should (hopefully) become more competitive as the after-glow of this newly announced product fades away. Hot Hardware"There is no question the SiliconEdge Blue doesn't light up the benchmarks like some of the more recent SSDs we've tested, but it's a solid product from a well-respected brand name storage company. If WD is able to get their prices in line better soon, we'd readily recommend it."

InsideHW"Although this is just the first-born in what we hope will turn into a prolific product family, we were pleasantly surprised with this disk’s overall quality level. The introduction of the internal TRIM command currently makes this SSD a must for anyone not using Windows 7, and we’re also glad that WD keeps introducing technologies that give them the upper hand in direct comparison with their competitors."

Legit Reviews"The WD SiliconEdge Blue has solid sequential performance, but the overall performance of the drive and price leaves us wanting more bang for the buck."

PC Advisor"The WD SiliconEdge Blue is solid but heavy. Performance is good, but it's a little less impressive when the SSD is asked to multitask with a series of smaller files (a common task for a computer’s OS to field). "

PC Perspective"For Western Digital's first crack at SSD, this new drive performed well. Sequential transfer rates are competitive with most modern units and can best Intel in write speeds. That said, this new offering leaves something to be desired when it comes to random access performance. "

PC World (US)"SSDs offer a significant performance increase over standard rotating drives, but at price out of reach of most consumers. Until prices come down and capacities go up, they will continue to be niche products meant only for enterprise servers and the most demanding power users. And though the SiliconEdge Blue was fast and consistent over time, it wasn't as fast (and it has a shorter warranty) as other SSDs we've tested."

Reg Hardware"In its current state, the SiliconEdge Blue is something of a stinker but I feel sure it could be saved with a firmware update. After that the next step is to slash the price to £499 but until that time I simply cannot recommend this drive."

Storage Review"If you want a reliable SSD that will probably outlast your computer, look no further than the Western Digital SiliconEdge Blue."

Tech ARP"If there is a fault we have to really pick on, it is the SiliconEdge Blue's relatively ravenous power consumption. It uses 23x more power than the Intel X25-M (50 nm) during reads or writes. Even when it idles, it uses up 10x more power than the Intel SSD. The result - higher operating temperatures and lower battery life (if you use it in a notebook). Western Digital really needs to work on this aspect."

Techgage"The Western Digital SiliconEdge took top honors in sustained file transfers and boot times, and offers excellent performance in our batch program testing. In the end the SiliconEdge does very well in many of our benchmarks and is a good drive to consider if the price is right or other factors such as having Western Digital's name backing the SSD are an important consideration for you."

TechRadar"As with any new SSD, we're reluctant to give an unreserved buy recommendation. But WD's first foray certainly looks promising."

Think Computers"Like most other solid state drives you still get the same set of great features the most important being TRIM support. Keep in mind you also have a 3 year warranty. One again this is a consumer level drive and not a performance drive, but there is no word if a SiliconEdge “Black” edition will be coming out anytime soon."

Tweak News"As for performance, we were able to determine that in real world use the SiliconEdge Blue is able to compete and in a few cases perform better than Indilinx Barefoot drives. At this point the Barefoot firmware can be considered mature and really close to the best we can get from the controller. The SiliconEdge Blue is fresh and just starting its lifecycle. "
