Seagate 500 Go - Momentus XT - 2,5", SATA 300, 7200 tpm, 32 Mo, Flash 4 Go

"If you're not going to buy an SSD for your notebook, then definitely go for the Momentus XT. I'd almost go as far as to say it's a great option for desktop users but unless you're on a budget you're probably better served by a small SSD + 3.5"

"In conclusion, the Seagate Momentus-XT has delivered on it's promise to deliver quick SSD-like performance to the Operating System and installed applications. After months of working with a SSD, my brief switch to the Momentus-XT solid state hybrid for testing purposes brought only a few occasional moments that contrasted the difference. In comparison, my switch from SSD to high-performance hard drive (VelociRaptor) was painfully frustrating and kept me waiting on applications to open. "

"The Seagate Momentus XT provides a real alternative to expensive (and small) SSD's. You aren't going to get the blazing speed of a good SSD but you don't trade wads of cash for a Momentus XT and you don't have to compromise on storage space."

"This is the first highly successful step for hybrid drives and once the design is refined, we may be looking at a series of products that can finally offer the perfect balance between price, performance and capacity. "

"The Seagate Momentus XT produced some interesting performance results. In the purely synthetic tests designed to look at raw throughput, the Momentus XT generally performed like a high-end, 7200 RPM hard drive--transfer rates typically fell between the WD Scorpio Blue and Seagate Barracuda desktop drive. In the system level benchmarks like those employed in PCMark Vantage, however, once the Momentus XT's adaptive memory technology learned the usage patterns and copied over the most commonly accessed bits of data to the solid state portion of the drive, performance improved dramatically. The Momentus XT was never able to truly match the performance of a true SSD, but its performance when the adaptive memory technology was used was far superior to a standard HD."

"So you can see a performance increase with your most used files without having to pay the premium that SSD’s currently go for. It’s obvious that this will be the technology that we see filter into our larger drives. Of course, write speeds are no different than current 7200RPM drives. I can’t wait to see this technology mature and move into 3.5 inch drives. I would love to see one with 10 to 20 gigs of adaptive memory to go with a much larger disc drive. At that size, Seagate could have everything write to the SSD and the adaptive memory could move the files that don’t get used to the slower disc drive. In that configuration, we would see SSD performance in our tests, and more often in day-to-day activities."

"The Seagate Momentus XT is the first Hybrid drive that nicely blends an SSD and HDD together to create a drive that performs well and won't empty your pocket book!"

"What does that mean? The drive works. Its base performance is every bit as good as a fast 500GB mechanical hard drive, and for your most frequently used files (including system files, hooray!), it’s substantially better. And considering that it’s only $50 more than a standard 7,200rpm Momentus drive, it’s a good upgrade before the giant step to an SSD."

"For now, the Seagate Momentus XT is a lone duckling in a sea of options. But now that the drive has proven itself, it will be interesting to see if other drive makers decide to go the route of hybrid technology. If sheer performance is what you want, SSD remains king. But it also remains expensive, and limited in capacity. But if you want a performance boost on a budget, and you value capacity too, this second-gen hybrid drive makes a good compromise."

"Overall, I like the Momentus XT for several reasons. It is a very fast drive, particularly for data writes, and it has a very attractive price that is likely to only get better as Seagate ramps up sales. Would I recommend this for a tablet or other device that would be left running while in transport? No. In the end, it's still a hard drive with an actuator arm that can damage a disk platter if bumped hard. But I would not hesitate to buy this drive for my laptop for the faster boot-up times, application loads and overall better performance."

"The Seagate Momentus XT is an excellent notebook hard drive and under the right circumstances surpasses drives well out of its class. The 4GB of cache helps to significantly improve the access of common read/write patterns that a user might see in their daily routine. At its worst it still offers a significant boost in performance over its older 7200.4 brother, but at its best it outperforms even the 10,000RPM Western Digital Velociraptor desktop hard drive."

"This drive is a must have for anyone with a notebook/netbook who is looking for more performance. It easily wins an Editor's Choice award from me and there are just no downsides to stepping up to one. Seagate even has a wonderful free tool you can download (Acronis) that will make it super easy to replace your current drive."

"The Momentus ® XT is an ideal replacement drive for your high-end laptop or small form factor PC or even a external portable drive for those large file transfers with quick transfer speeds. The price point for the Seagate® Momentus XT is very attractive at prices comparable to the smallest SSD drive on the market (at the time of this review)."

"While the Momentus XT offers good sequential write performance, sequential reads prove more problematic. The rapid drop in read speeds we observed in HD Tune isn't encouraging, and neither is the drive's poor read performance in FC-Test. Throw in a complete lack of performance scaling in IOMeter between 1 and 32 concurrent IO requests, and the XT looks to have just as many problems as it has potential."
